During a recent appearance on THAT Rocks!, Carmine Appice revealed that he joked about the Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx’s reliance on playback in his spoken word performances.
When asked whether he plans to do more of these spoken word events in the future, the drummer replied:
“I did five of those [spoken word shows] this year. Those were really great and a lot of fun because what I do is I don’t prepare those stories. I got a screen, a screen with an intro and natural answers. The screen shows up with stories, and then I get the audience to pick the stories, and that whole thing was going on with Nikki Sixx. I did a little goof on it.”
He continued, expressing how he uses Sixx in his shows:
“I said, ‘Look, we never ever do tracks. I did all my best ever to use tracks.’ And then I turned to this side, and then we got a track comes on of me talking, and I’m looking around like, ‘What’s that?’ I grab my [mic] and ‘You see?’ Then we start the show.”
Rumors regarding Sixx initially emerged when Mick Mars sued him and the band, saying they used pre-recorded music for their live shows. Appice then disclosed the bassist who recorded Nikki’s bass parts. Former Mötley Crüe singer John Corabi also stepped into the debate, implying that Sixx probably used backing tracks.
The conflict between Sixx and Appice started when the drummer expressed his thoughts regarding Mars leaving Mötley Crüe. The dispute intensified when Nikki referred to Carmine as a ‘washed-up drummer.’ In response, the musician openly stated that he could, at the very least, play his instrument skillfully.
More recently, speaking to HEAVY Magazine, Appice shared that he had formed a friendship with the Mötley Crüe members while touring with Ozzy Osbourne. So, he was surprised at Sixx’s words on their conflict. The drummer said:
“When she [Sharon Osbourne] said, ‘Your name is too big. You need to start your own band,’ I said, ‘Okay, I’m going to start my own band.’ We were on tour with Mötley Crüe, and you know all that baloney I went with Mötley with Nikki Sixx in the last few months, which surprised me because I thought we were friends.”
