After two years removed from Euphoria, creator Sam Levinson has started writing the upcoming third season of the HBO drama.
The filmmaker directed the Zendaya-led series in 2019 and has been the main writer ever since. Outside of the hit TV show, his most recent series was working alongside musician The Weeknd for the show The Idol.
HBO chairman and CEO Casey Bloys revealed the news shortly after the Emmys. The network had since cleaned up at the award show, being showered with many trophies for the final season of Succession as well as awarding Jennifer Coolidge for ‘Supporting Actress in a Drama’ for her role on White Lotus.
When asked about the upcoming season of Euphoria, Bloys said that Levinson is hard at work bringing the next season to life, telling The Wrap, “He’s writing Season 3 right now, he’s in the thick of it. So I don’t know that he is laying out what the future looks like. It’s just getting Season 3 done”.
While there have been suspicions about whether the series is coming to an end, Bloys also said that he hasn’t had any discussions with Levinson about the show’s final production schedule. Despite the massive popularity, Bloys said that the show’s ongoing production is dependent on the kind of stories that the director wants to tell.
While Levinson has remained tight-lipped about the next season, he did say that the next chapter in the saga will be closer to a film noir. Even though the scripts have yet to be finalised, the series will be carrying on without a key member of the cast. Following the tragic passing of actor Angus Cloud, there is still question over how the show will work around the role of Fez.
Outside of the world of network television, Levinson has also been moving his ideas to the big screen, becoming an executive producer for horror movies X and Pearl. While the series is in the writing sessions, there has been no word on when production will start.
