Eminem is producing Stans, a new film that explores the fanatical, sometimes dark culture of fandom.
The film takes its name from the rapper’s 2000 hit song, “Stan,” which tells the story of an obsessed fan whose delirious hero-worship leads him to kill his pregnant partner and himself.
Directed by Steven Leckart (What’s My Name: Muhammad Ali), the documentary is said to show a “revealing, edgy, and disarmingly personal journey into the world of superfandom, told through the lens of one of the world’s most iconic and enduring artists, Eminem, and the fans that worship him.”
Eminem’s Shady Films is co-producing a documentary along with DIGA Studios and Hill District Media with distribution coming from Paramount/MTV. It is set to be released later this year.
In a statement, Paul Rosenberg, Eminem’s manager and co-founder of Shady Films, said, “Stans will be the opportunity for us to to turn the camera around and ask the audience about being fans — and in some cases, fanatics. This is a study of the relationship between fanbase and artist through the lens of one of Eminem’s most fascinating songs and one of the world’s most important entertainers.”
“Stan” is regarded as a portmanteau of “stalker” and “fan,” and has become a widely used term for consumed and possessive fans of someone or something.
