The Orb and David Gilmour recently released a new project called ‘Metallic Spheres In Colour’ and invited fans on Instagram to reimagine the tracks using tools created by the AI company Vermillio. With a video promoting the concept, the post from the band’s official page read:
“Harness the power of AI. Reinterpret tracks from our new album using AI-driven tools.”
According to the description on the project’s official website, the band and the former Pink Floyd member have plans to use the artwork generated by fans in their upcoming music video.
The new remixing tools by Vermillio allow fans to create album artwork by typing their feelings about the music reworked from The Orb and Gilmour’s 2010 album, ‘Metallic Spheres.’ The AI can also generate personalized versions of the tracks based on the album cover, mood, and tempo.
The New AI-Based Project
The Orb and Gilmour first mentioned this project in a joint Instagram post with Pink Floyd back in August. Before releasing it on September 29, they used AI to help re-record and remix some of the original 2010 tracks.
According to the early announcements, The Orb’s founder Alex Paterson played a key role in this new version, as explained by the album’s producer, Martin ‘Youth’ Glover:
“The idea for ‘Metallic Spheres In Colour’ was that Alex Paterson could have done more on the first version, and he didn’t really have the opportunity because we had a philosophy of making the music like the ‘Blade Runner’ soundtrack meets ‘Wish You Were Here.’ So, I asked him why don’t we remix it and make it like an Orb classic? And in doing that, it’s almost like a completely different album.”
The official video for ‘Metallic Spheres In Colour: Movement 1 – Excerpt’ came out a few weeks before the full album release. You can check out the video created by Kavi Karnapura das below.
