Queen recently shared the 34th part of the new YouTube series, entitled ‘Queen The Greatest Live: Freddie Mercury.’ In the newly shared video, an interview with Freddie Mercury surfaced, where Mercury is seen revealing why visual theatrics are such a vital part of any show of the band.
Along with having one of the world-renowned frontmen in the history of rock’n’roll, the band is also famous for putting on entertaining shows. In the video, Mercury said of putting on visuals in their performances:
“I think that’s why people try different things, and a lot of visual theatrics have always been there from any kind of Theatre entertainment, like I mean Gypsy Rose Lee, you know, from strippers. You’ve got to do something to strip or whatever; it’s a kind of entertainment.
So it’s visual, you know, it’s got to be. So, visual theatrics will always be used. All the greatest acts have used it, in one way or another, like Jimi Hendrix or the Stones. It has to be there. It’s a form of entertainment.”
The energy and the message Mercury wanted to give the audience was well received. Clarifying that he wanted not just to sing but to dance too, he shared his experience of being on stage:
“It’s like, plus, you do your music and then entertainment plus. And I, sort of personally, you know, I just like doing that anyway. I’d hate to go on stage and just sit and sing my songs. I have to move. It depends on each song. If there’s an aggression in some song, I have to show it.”
Additionally, the rocker wanted to spark outrage with his idea of a different look. Here’s what he decided to do:
“At that time, to introduce a certain kind of balletic look into rock ‘n’ roll was sort of outrageous. And I thought, you know, what’s a real funky rock ‘n’ roll audience going to say to this prancing ballerina coming on? I thought, ‘Fine, I’ll sing my rock ‘n’ roll songs with a tutu on, I don’t care.’”
Although the late Queen frontman caused the mentioned outrage intentionally, he also caused a few more after his passing away, such as ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ getting canceled due to its title for ‘offending plus-sized women’ and ‘fat-shaming.’
Queen has managed to captivate audiences with their current frontman, Adam Lambert, even after losing their original lead singer. With their recent performances, the band continues to create unforgettable experiences for their fans and proves that the essence of Queen still lives on.
