How Slipknot Changed Carrie Underwood’s Life

Carrie Underwood recently gave an interview and shared a list of the groups that reshaped her music taste over the years. Carrie reminisced the times she went to rock festivals while growing up:

“I remember going to big rock festivals in Tulsa and kind of being exposed to bands like Slipknot and people like that. So it was just a really great time in music. I feel like the late ’90s and early 2000s was just a fun time in rock music.”

The singer further talked about the rockstars she was a fan, mentioning Queen, and how she idolises famous vocalists:

“I’ve always been a huge fan and lover of Freddie Mercury. I would listen to him when I was a kid. He could do so many amazing things with his voice. People like that — who had incredible voices — I was always drawn to. I would want to try to do what they do. They were my teachers.”

Underwood also clarified that she listens to metal music circumstantially:

“When I work out, I like to listen to things that are really angry. I couldn’t do it on a daily basis or driving in my car. I think that would be kind of weird.”

Carrie was vocal about being a huge I Prevail fan. I Prevail tweeted in September 2022 regarding their third studio album’s success:

“One month of ‘True Power.’ 56M streams. All thanks to you.”

Underwood replied to the tweet with:

“I think I was a large number of them!”

Throughout the years, Carrie covered songs like Skid Row’s ‘I Remember You,’ Mötley Crüe’s ‘Home Sweet Home’ and many Guns N’ Roses tracks. In 2019, she collaborated with Joan Jett for a CMA Fest set. Underwood shared her thoughts back then about working with Joan:

“I’ve always been a fan of Joan Jett. I will use any excuse I can to work with Joan Jett. It’s intimidating being in the studio with someone like Joan. She’s a legend!”
