Tenacious D’s Jack Black recalled in a recent chat with Metal Hammer the time they opened for Motörhead in L.A. The actor and singer shared Lemmy Kilmister’s ‘humiliating’ response to finding out that he had Tenacious D as his opener. Black explained:
“We get the word that Lemmy said, ‘No! I don’t want nobody opening! F*ck sake! I don’t need them; I don’t want them!’ We were like, ‘Oh, f*ck, Lemmy [Kilmister] hates us. He’s not going to let us do the thing.’”
Even though Lemmy didn’t want an opener for his show, Tenacious D did it anyway. Jack shared why he thought Kilmister didn’t want anything to do with them; he said:
“I think what it really was, was that he was just pissed that the show didn’t sell out, and he didn’t want to admit that we were actually helping.”
Not all of Tenacious D’s performances with bands were the same as their experience with Motörhead’s Kilmister. The band also got together with Guns N’ Roses guitarist and Foo Fighters onstage at L.A.’s Staples Center in 2015.
Black also shared in the interview the night they sang their version of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Immigrant Song’ during Dave Grohl’s 46th birthday bash. He expressed:
“All of a sudden, we had this f*cking mountaintop jam with Slash and Dave Grohl, and it was f*cking cream dream deluxe.”
Besides performances with other bands, Tenacious D also has formed an ‘alliance’ with Ozzy Osbourne. Black shared with SiriusXM last winter what they received from the Prince of Darkness. Black said:
“You know that we formed an alliance with Ozzy Osbourne. He gave us a pre-listening to his latest record, and weirdly he sent over the record, and he sent over a 40-foot inflatable Ozzy for us.”
