“It was a very kind thing that she did,” said Lopez after Larson raved about her impact on the 2024 Golden Globes red carpet
Jennifer Lopez appreciates the love from Brie Larson.
After the Captain Marvel actress stopped Lopez and tearfully gushed over her career’s impact at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, the “On the Floor” performer is reflecting on the “overwhelming” moment.
“It brings tears to my eyes now because it’s very moving, because you give your heart and soul to this when you’re an artist,” said Lopez, 54, in a new interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1.
“I remember being a little girl and watching West Side Story and seeing Rita Moreno and knowing what that meant for me,” added the singer and actress. “When I was looking at Brie and I saw her and I was just staring in her eyes because she was so locked in with me and just [was] like, ‘I have wanted to tell you this for so long.'”
Lopez explained that her admiration for stars like Moreno helped her understand Larson’s feelings in the moment.
“I saw myself, and I saw the little girl, and to think that I did that for somebody was really, really overwhelming,” she told Lowe. “I could have really taken a moment there, but it was very lovely to have an experience like that.”
“I don’t think I ever imagined that I would have an experience like that with somebody who is so talented and who I watch their movies and who, is kind of in a way, my contemporary,” continued J.Lo. “It was a very kind thing that she did, and it meant a lot to me, probably even more than it did to her.”
During a viral red carpet conversation with ET at the Golden Globes on Sunday, Larson saw Lopez standing behind her and choked up. “Oh my God. I’m gonna cry,” Larson said as she closed her eyes. “I can’t deal with J.Lo.”
Despite fanning herself with her hands and appearing to be at a loss for words, Larson did indeed “deal” with the superstar, whom she immediately complimented. “You mean to much to me,” Larson told Lopez as she said introduced herself.
The Oscar winner soon got candid with the fellow actress. “I saw Selena and it made me want to be an actor. And you’ve always meant so much to me,” she said of Lopez’s 1997 film.
“Oh my God, don’t make me cry,” Lopez responded.
While both women began to tear up even more, Larson called the moment “a dream” of hers.
“Your work ethic is so important,” she told Lopez. “Thank you. I’ve been wanting to say that to you for a long time so I’m really — I didn’t think it was going to be right now. OK. I’m gonna have to go do a shot of tequila or something.”
“I just did one,” Lopez joked in response, before waving to Larson’s mother off to the side.
On Wednesday, Lopez released her new song “Can’t Get Enough” — the lead single from her upcoming album This Is Me…Now, which drops Feb. 16 alongside an accompanying Prime Video film.
Elsewhere in the Apple Music interview, she revealed the album was completed upon its initial announcement a year ago. “It just took that long to get everything perfect and right and to make the movie,” said Lopez. “I came up with the idea for the movie after the music was made.”
The “Jenny from the Block” singer added, “I was like, ‘OK, there’s something really special to be said here along with this story,’ and there’s also the journey that I’ve been on all this time, and I wanted to share all of those things with this project because it really is a culmination of a whole life in a way.”
