Johnny Van Zant recently joined a conversation with The Archive of B-sox and revealed who has the final say in Lynyrd Skynyrd while deciding on their setlist.
When the host asked about the decision-making process when it comes to selecting songs for performances, wondering if there are ever disagreements within the band, the singer replied:
“We always discuss it, and we just did a rehearsal two days in Nashville and put together the set for the summer, and we went back and forth. So, we try whatever really fits together, whatever salutes to get. And there’s never really an argument at all. It’s kind of like, we all got opinions, but you know, I’ve been here 36 years; I get seniority [Laughs].”
Later during the interview, the host shifted the conversation towards Lynyrd Skynyrd’s plans beyond the tour, asking about their upcoming projects. Van Zant explained in his response:
“We got a PBS special. There’s actually a viewing of one of Gary’s [Rossington] last shows we did at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and that he did with us. And actually, it’s out in theaters right now. So there’s a lot of stuff happening, and what we’re just trying to get through this summer.”
He continued, referring to the death of Rossington:
“Like I said, it was a hard year at the beginning here, but you know what? Every dark tunnel has a light. And, the music has always been the light, and our fans have always been our lighting.”
Following the release of their concert film, Lynyrd Skynyrd is set to hit the road with their North American co-headlining tour, also featuring ZZ Top. Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour will kick off on July 21 in West Palm Beach, Florida, and end on September 17 in Camden, New Jersey.
