As rock stars navigate the balance between their passion for music and the physical demands of touring and performing, they each reach a point where they contemplate stepping back from the limelight. Even though it is difficult, the decision to retire is as much a part of an artist’s legacy as their music. Jon Bon Jovi also had one requirement he set for his retirement.
Speaking to Time Out Dubai in 2010, the frontman answered the questions from the band’s crew. When chiropractor Dean Grillo asked what would lead him to stop going on tour, Bon Jovi replied:
“People not wanting to come see it, though I don’t see you and I having this conversation when I’m 60 or 70. I don’t know how [Mick] Jagger does it. Jagger’s gotta do the sh*t I gotta do. So I’m holding the bar up to see how high and how long he can go, but that’s tough.”
Bon Jovi’s Views On Touring At An Older Age
As a rocker who has been around for over four decades, retirement is a topic the singer frequently gets asked about. In a 2020 chat with USA Today, Bon Jovi was asked if there are any more significant achievements or goals that he wants to accomplish. To which the rocker replied:
“Honestly, at this point, what I’m hoping to do is to first and foremost enjoy it, and then keep integrity. I don’t ever want to be on the ‘Where are they now?’ pile. I jokingly say, no one loved the Fat Elvis. I mean that with the utmost respect, but you got to know when it’s time to go. I can still write a song, and that’s what matters to me most. The rest of it, I’ll do it as I see fit.”
Upcoming Album And Richie Sambora’s Potential Return
Considering recent developments in his career, the frontman has no plans for retirement, at least for now. The band has an upcoming album scheduled for release in 2024. On November 17, they released a holiday single titled ‘Christmas Isn’t Christmas,’ as part of their new record.
The former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora is also considering a potential return to the band. He reflected on the reunion in a new chat with People, stating:
“So yeah, it definitely could happen. It’s just a question of when everybody’s ready to go do it. It will be a big, massive kind of undertaking.”
Still, the guitarist isn’t sure about the timing. He mentioned that the decision depends on various people involved and that the conditions need to be right. He also expressed that it’s a good time for a reunion, considering it’s the band’s 40th anniversary.
