Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Rickey Medlocke shared his five favorite albums with AXS TV. Along with Jimi Hendrix, and The Beatles, Rickey also included Eric Clapton’s former band Cream and shared the song he considers exceptional:
“Cream because Eric Clapton was a big influence on me. If you listen to my playing, you’ll hear the influence of Clapton in it. And I just loved him. One record I would love to have by Clapton and the Cream would be ‘Wheels of Fire.’ I loved that record. ‘Crossroads’ on that was just so bad to the bone.”
In a 2016 interview, Medlocke chose the very same album as ‘the album he would like to be buried with.’ In a separate interview, he also mentioned Clapton and said:
“I’ve never met Eric Clapton, although I’d love to shake his hand and tell him I’m grateful. I developed my vibrato thanks to him.”
Apart from his playing style, Rickey previously mentioned how he behaves as a ‘rock star’ in a recent interview, stating he doesn’t separate himself from other people and his fans:
“When I always talked about playing in bands, I never really thought about being a quote unquote, rock star. Still to this day, when I go out and drive around and people know who I am, they know I love to stop and talk to them. I don’t try to set myself apart from people.
Yeah, I’m the lead guitar player in Lynyrd Skynyrd. People like to think of that rock star thing… I love the profession I’m in. I love entertaining. Entertaining is my biggest thing. Because this is what I do. I play music. And it’s my love of music will take me through this the rest of my life.”
In the same interview, he also pointed out that he prioritizes his fans while on stage, saying:
“We hold firm to that idea that we owe that to the fans. We keep the integrity of the songs, and the integrity of the band; we hold true to it.
Every time I walk out there, I’ve got this thing in me, and it’s really important for me to be 110% there for those people that love the music and that have been dedicated to this band as fans forever. That’s really important to me, and the fans are the most important part of this.”
