It’s no secret to anyone that Madame Web wasn’t a huge hit in theaters. In fact, the film’s reception, both with the fans and the critics, has been disastrous, but here’s the silver lining: the movie is now a hit on Netflix.
Madame Web is Sony’s latest entry in its Spider-Man Universe. The superhero film following the Spider-Man character Madame Web had Dakota Johnson in the leading role, with an ensemble cast consisting of Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, and Emma Roberts, among others. With a premiere on Valentine’s Day, the film flopped badly at the box office.

However, like many other failed superhero films, Madame Web has found success online after being released on on Netflix. The superhero film just hit streaming services this week, and it’s streaming on Netflix thanks to the deal the streamer has with Sony Pictures. Despite bombing in theaters, Madame Web took over Netflix’s movie charts, webbing its way to the top of the list.
During its theater run, Madame Web grossed only $43.8 million on the domestic market, adding $56.4 million internationally. Overall, it scored $100.2 million at the worldwide box office, barely covering its $80 million budget (via The Numbers). When it comes to its critical reception, the film, which has become the target of many jokes and memes, has an abysmal 11% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with only 57% approval rating from the audience.
Madame Web’s Latest Accomplishment Was Roasted Again
Even before Madame Web hit theaters, fans have roasted the film for its promotional photos and marketing. During the film’s press tour, Sony reportedly was upset with Dakota Johnson, as the studio rumoredly believed the actress was “dragging” the film. None of this, alongside the actual film, bode well, and its recent accomplishment on streaming led to some additional roasting.
Under the news of the film becoming a success on Netflix on the X page @SpiderMan_Newz, some of the comments noted why the film failed in the first place. One user noted, “Because no one wanted to pay a movie ticket to watch this in theaters,” with another noting “so many victims.” Another person had a more practical approach, noting that “This shows people wait till it comes to streaming since it is cheaper.” This doesn’t always reflect reality, considering Dune: Part Two passed over $700 million at the global box office, with Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire reigning over with $559.1 million (via The Numbers).
Another fan weighed in, “Waste of time,” with another user agreeing, “They say this movie is horrible. I’m not sure if that’s true. I just wish I could sit through the whole movie to find out. Oh well, I’ll never know.”
Others saw the film’s success as a way to hope for a sequel: “Let’s GOOOOOO Madame Web 2 !!!” wrote an excited fan. So far, there are no official plans for a sequel.
