In the world of acting, retirement isn’t quite as definitive a term as it is in other professions, with Martin Scorsese harbouring hopes of luring one of the greats out of self-imposed exile.
Having previously stepped away from the screen to take an extended sabbatical that saw him disappear almost entirely off the radar to become an apprentice shoemaker, Daniel Day-Lewis would return by partnering with Scorsese in Gangs of New York.
It marked their second collaboration following 1993’s The Age of Innocence, but they never got the chance to complete the hattrick before Day-Lewis once more announced his intentions to give up cinema, with the caveat that his publicly announced 2017 retirement would be permanent.
Since then, the actor has stayed out of the public eye, although it stands to reason that at least one filmmaker, production company, or studio has tested the waters in an attempt to draw the three-time Oscar winner back on set.
If anyone can do it, then Scorsese would certainly have a much better chance than most, and the director has gone ahead and opened that door. Day-Lewis would make a rare public appearance at the National Board of Review Awards, presenting the icon with the ‘Best Director’ prize for Killers of the Flower Moon.
Taking the stage, Scorsese said of Day-Lewis: “We did two films together and it’s one of the greatest experiences of my life,” before dropping the tease that “maybe there’s time for one more.”
Day-Lewis hasn’t displayed an itch to get back to acting at any point during his retirement, but given his closeness with Scorsese, there’s always the small chance that he could yet end up appearing in a third one of his productions.
