Paul McCartney recently shared the John Lennon’ element’ that still haunted him and how he still checked in with his late bandmate while speaking on his podcast, McCartney: A Life in Lyrics.
The former Beatle was talking about his songwriting with his podcast partner and poet Paul Muldoon when he got candid about how Lennon still had an influence on his writing.
Then, McCartney opened up about how he still ‘mentally’ checked in with Lennon while coming up with any new lyrics. The 81-year-old bassist said:
“Often I’ll sort of refer… ‘What would John think of this? He’d have thought it was too soppy,’ so, I’ll change it [the lyrics].”
He also stated how things were ‘easier’ when Lennon was around, as ‘two minds at work’ made it much simpler to write good lyrics. Still, there also seemed to be an ‘element’ in the pair’s ‘miraculous’ partnership that McCartney felt haunted by:
“That interplay [between him and Lennon] was miraculous. You don’t have this opposing element so much [now]. I have to do that myself.”
