Kanye West, as problematic as he is, has produced some fantastic music. However, he has made some bold statements in his lyrics and music videos over the years. That said, prior to his marriage to Kim Kardashian, he openly expressed his love for her on a track.
In 2012, Kanye West released a G.O.O.D. Music compilation album entitled Cruel Summer. With appearances from Teyana Taylor, Pusha T and Kid Cudi, to name a few, it was a star-studded project. There were even productions from Hit-Boy, and it was on the Hit-Boy-produced track ‘Cold’ that West espoused his lust for Kardashian.
‘Cold’ was released as the second single for Cruel Summer and features DJ Khaled. The song references two of West’s relationships—his relationship with Kim Kardashian and his ex-girlfriend Amber Rose. He also mentions Kardashian’s previous husband, basketball player Kris Humphries and Rose’s then-boyfriend, Wiz Khalifa.
Revealing that he fawned over the reality TV star while she was married to Humphries, West rapped, “And I’ll admit, I fell in love with Kim ’round the same time she fell in love with him / Well, that’s cool, baby girl, do your thang / Lucky I didn’t have Jay drop him from the team.”
Speaking to Wiz Khalifa, who had just got engaged to Amber Rose, West rhymed, “And the whole industry want to f*ck your old chick / Only n*gga I got respect for is Wiz.” The song didn’t land high in the charts. However, West thought it was special.
In an interview with MTV News, Hit-Boy revealed Kanye West was never supposed to have the record, revealing, “I actually had sent that beat to Khaled, and Khaled gave it to Ye. It was supposed to be for Khaled’s album, and ‘Ye was just like, ‘This needs to be out now; this is an urgent record.’”
The compilation album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and was a follow-up to Kanye West’s and Jay-Z’s 2011 project Watch The Throne, which boasted hits such as ‘N*ggas In Paris.’ You can listen ‘Cold’ below.
